The council director responsible for Aberdeen Crematorium missed a meeting about the baby ashes scandal because he was on holiday.

Councillors met on Wednesday to discuss a report on the impact of the scandal in the city, where babies and foetuses were cremated alongside adults for years.

But housing and environment director Pete Leonard, who has been responsible for overseeing the crematorium since 2010, failed to turn up because he was on annual leave.

Council members were given a report containing the early findings of an investigation into the management of Aberdeen Crematorium.

Chief executive Angela Scott said its findings will not be made public.

Mr Leonard was criticised for describing the overnight cremation of babies as "slow cooking" in a national report on the scandal published by Dame Elish Angiolini in July.

The report branded joint cremations at Aberdeen Crematorium "unethical and abhorrent".

Of the 14 crematoriums examined during her national inquiry, Dame Elish said she was most concerned about Aberdeen, calling the actions of staff "deeply disturbing".
