An 89-year-old woman knocked down as she crossed the road at the weekend has died in hospital.

Mary Donald was hit by a blue Peugeot 208 being driven by a 65-year-old woman on the A920 South Road in Ellon around 10.35am on Saturday.

Emergency services were called and she was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The woman driving the Peugeot 208 was uninjured and police confirmed on Wednesday that Ms Donald had died from her injuries in hospital.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "We can confirm that the 89-year-old female pedestrian involved in a road traffic collision with a blue Peugeot 208 on the A920 South Road, Ellon, on Saturday August 20, 2016, has sadly died.

"She is named as Mary Donald from the Ellon area."

Sergeant Rob Warnock, from the Aberdeenshire and Moray Road Policing Unit, said: "First and foremost our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mary who was well known in the Ellon area.

"Inquiries are ongoing and I would urge anyone with information who hasn't yet come forward to contact Police Scotland on 101.''
