Bones have been discovered by workers digging under a public building in Aberdeen.

Contractors made the discovery on Wednesday during major renovation work at Aberdeen Art Gallery on Schoolhill.

The discovery comes after 92 bodies dating back to the 13th century were found under the building earlier this year.

Aberdeen City Council has now drafted in an archaeologist to check out the bones, which are believed to be human.

Councillor Angela Taylor said: "Pieces of bone were found on the site yesterday.

"The archaeologist has removed all the fragments exposed yesterday which were mixed in with pieces of pottery, from different eras to the bones, and it is thought that these were from a backfill from a previous excavation undertaken when the gallery was extended in the early 1900s.

"The archaeologist will remain on site today in case there are any further discoveries but we are not expecting any further delays to the project."

The gallery is currently undergoing a £30m redevelopment including the construction of a rooftop gallery and modern concert hall as well as new galleries and improved facilities for visitors.

It is set to reopen to the public in winter 2017.
