A fire ripped through a bowling alley in an Aberdeenshire town on Sunday night.

Harley's on Old Gamrie Road in Macduff went up in flames shortly after 9pm.

Crews battled the blaze through the night after it spread from the building's roof.

No one was injured in the fire but Harley's was left badly damaged.

The fire was brought under control at around midnight and most of the appliances returned to base at around 1.30am.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said: "Eight pumps attended all together.

"They used four water jets, one hose reel jet, and ten sets of breathing apparatus. There were no rescues or casualties."

A number of firefighters remained at the scene on Monday morning to monitor the building.

A fire investigation team is expected to arrive later in the day to begin an inquiry into the cause of the blaze.

SFRS group manager David Meldrum, who was at the scene, said: "The crews worked very hard and dealt with the fire quickly and effectively.

"Their actions managed to prevent substantial damage to the building and they were able to contain the fire to the roof space. Thankfully no one was inside the premises at the time."
