A man has been left in a critical condition following an attack in Aberdeenshire.

The assault happened on Denmark Street in Fraserburgh at around 2.50am on Sunday.

The 33-year-old was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where his condition is stable but serious.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack and is expected to appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court on Monday.

Detective inspector Norman Stevenson said: "As a result of our enquiries, a 23-year-old man has been arrested and will appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court today.

"I would still urge anyone with additional information to come forward as every witness viewpoint is extremely important in assisting us with the investigation.

"Around the time in question large numbers of people would have been leaving nearby licensed premises and I would ask that anyone who saw anything and has information that could assist to contact us as soon as possible.

"Please contact Police Scotland on 101 or if you wish to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
