North east police have disrupted the activities of 11 organised crime gangs and seized drugs worth nearly £1m.

Hauls of heroin, cocaine, cannabis and about £150,000 in cash were recovered during 263 raids in the Aberdeen area this year.

About 200 arrests linked to serious organised crime have been made in the region since April 2015.

There are 196 known gangs operating in Scotland, according to a new report on organised crime in the north east.

Aberdeen officers have been involved in investigations into a dozen groups in the last 12 months, while the Police Scotland's Specialist Crime Division has made inquiries into another six.

Heroin and cocaine are the most popular commodities for gangs and the north west of England is the main source for drugs which are trafficked north of the border, according to police.
