A BP platform that leaked oil into the North Sea has resumed production after nearly a month.

About 95 tonnes of oil spilled from the Clair platform to the west of Shetland on October 2 and dispersed away from land.

It is believed a fault in a system designed to separate oil and water was responsible for the leak.

A spokeswoman for the firm said: "Production from the Clair platform has been restarted. Clair was taken offline on October 2 following a technical issue with the system that separates water, oil and gas.

"Our investigation into this incident is ongoing, however, the technical issues we encountered have been resolved.

"We have worked in close liaison with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and kept them fully informed throughout."

Following the leak, WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said the incident highlighted "the dangers posed by oil and gas operations".
