A special assembly is being held at the school where Bailey Gwynne was stabbed to death one year ago.

The 16-year-old died after being stabbed through the heart at Cults Academy in Aberdeen on October 28 last year.

His teenage killer, who cannot be named because of his age, was detained for nine years over the incident.

Pupils will gather on Friday to remember Bailey, who was described as "gentle and caring" by head teacher Anna Muirhead in the days following his death.

An inquiry into the killing concluded it could have been avoided "if those who knew [the killer] carried weapons in school had reported this to staff".

A Cults Academy pupil later told STV News that he regretted not warning teachers.

Pupils at the school are now being taught about the dangers of knives in special sessions.

An STV News investigation found nearly 700 children have been excluded for attacks with weapons in Scottish schools but tougher rules on knife sales introduced to tackle the problem are not being enforced in Scotland.
