A 14-year-old girl critically injured in a road crash that claimed the life of her friend remains in hospital.

Neringa Narusyte died when the car she was travelling in collided with another vehicle in Moray on Wednesday.

Her friend, who has not been named, is being treated for life-threatening injuries at a hospital in Glasgow.

Two other teenage girls who were also passengers in the car were seriously hurt, while the 17-year-old boy behind the wheel suffered minor injuries.

The 42-year-old man who was driving the car they collided with did not suffer a serious injury.

Following her death, Neringa's mother, Ilona Narusyte, said: "She was a lovely, nice girl. She was just a teenager.

"She's always going to be loved and remembered. I still can't believe that she's gone."

Floral tributes have been laid at the family's home in Buckie, where they moved 11 years ago from Lithuania.

Neringa was a third-year pupil at Buckie High School and had recently gone back to class after the October holidays.

Head teacher Neil Johnson said: "This is the type of news that all schools dread and it has hit everyone here very hard.

"The loss of Neringa is felt by us all but I am confident that the very strong community spirit at Buckie High will help us support each other and deal with this tragedy."
