A man has been charged after a woman was seriously injured in an alleged assault.

The 45-year-old victim was taken to hospital after the incident in Portknockie, Moray, on Wednesday.

She is being treated at Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin and is not believed to be in a life-threatening condition.

A 41-year-old man is expected to appear at Elgin Sheriff Court on Friday.

Detective inspector Alan Armit said: "I would once again like to reassure the public that this incident was contained and completely isolated.

"There will be a notable police presence in the area for the time being. The local community are thanked for their patience so far."
