Firefighters had to step in after an organised bonfire in a north-east town got out of control.

Onlookers at the event at Gadle Braes in Peterhead on Tuesday night reported that lamp posts were on fire.

A fire engine had been on standby at the scene but the crew called for back-up shortly before 8pm.

The fire died down before firefighters intervened, however it flared again later on.

Crews used one jet and a hose reel jet to bring the blaze under control and they were stood down at 12.30am.

One local resident said that the large blaze had "destroyed" lamp posts and melted several windows.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "It was a planned bonfire, so one appliance was there on standby.

"A further call was received to say it was getting out of control, and a second appliance was mobilised."

Police were called to the scene amid some reports that youths had been causing trouble, however there were no issues reported once officers arrived.

Firefighters were also forced to intervene at last year's bonfire at Peterhead under similar circumstances.
