Thieves struck while young cadets were on parade at a Remembrance Sunday event.

More than £100 was stolen from unattended purses at ceremony being held at the Sea Cadets facility in Pocra Quay, Aberdeen.

It is thought to have taken place between 2pm and 2.20pm on Sunday.

The charity, which gives children and young people training in maritime skills, said the crime happened as the cadets were on parade, with a "VIP" among those losing money.

The event on Sunday was attended by the executive officer and crew of the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Diamond.

Police said a number of people were attending the service as well as cadets and staff. A low three-figure sum was taken from three purses at the event.

Inspector Carron McKellar said: "This is a disgraceful incident which has left the victims shocked and upset.

"We are urgently appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or has any knowledge to contact us on 101.

"It is understood that the suspect entered the building while visitors were in another part of the building and took the money. Nothing else has been taken."
