Three firefighters who tried to save the lives of a mother and son who drowned at Aberdeen Beach have been commended by the fire service.

Julie Walker and six-year-old Lucas were pulled from the sea on August 20 by David Gordon, Jamie Lawrie and Martin Vardy.

The firefighters performed CPR on the pair but they could not be resuscitated.

On Tuesday night, they were each presented with a commendation by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service assistant chief officer Robert Scott.

"It is with great sadness that despite their very best efforts, both mother and son could not be saved," he said.

"The thoughts of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are with their family, their friends and their community."

Following their deaths, Ms Walker, 37, was described as a "kind and loving mother", while Lucas was called a "lively and energetic little boy".

They also thanked the emergency services and members of the public who tried to rescue them.

A council-led review of safety procedures at Aberdeen beach is under way.

Sixteen other men and women were presented with long service and good conduct medals at the Town House ceremony.

They included Stonehaven watch manager John Strachan, who received his 40-year service certificate.
