A nurse who pushed an elderly care home resident in a wheelchair into his bed, causing him to tip backwards, has been struck off.

John Cobb has been banned from nursing after the "violent" incident at The Grove care home in Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, in September 2015.

A Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) panel found charges he tried to administer medication by force proved.

The panel heard Mr Cobb was in charge of the home during the night shift of September 17.

The incident took place when he tried to administer medication to a resident, referred to as Resident A at the hearing, who was elderly and used a wheelchair.

A colleague of Mr Cobb, referred to as Ms 1, told the hearing she saw him attempt to push his fingers into the elderly man's mouth.

Describing her evidence, the panel said: "She and Mr Cobb went to the drugs trolley in the corridor after the medication administration incident but after a few steps heard Resident A shout 'b*****d'.

"Mr Cobb appeared angry. He turned and 'went running' back into the room and went to shut the door behind him.

"Ms 1 followed and managed to keep the door open. She did not think that Mr Cobb was aware of her presence. She witnessed Mr Cobb place both hands on Resident A's wheelchair armrests facing Resident A."

It added: "Ms 1 demonstrated how Mr Cobb pulled the chair towards himself and then forcefully pushed it causing it to slam into the bed and tip back.

"When Ms 1 shouted at Mr Cobb to stop he said 'he came charging at me'."

The witness became "very emotional" while giving evidence, the panel said.

Another colleague told the panel Resident A was only able to "shuffle" his wheelchair using one hand and was unable to "charge".

Resident A was "shaken and distressed" by the incident, the panel heard, and became withdrawn afterwards.

The panel continued: "All four of the live witnesses stated that Mr Cobb's behaviour was unacceptable, shocking, unlike anything they had witnessed before and that they considered it to be entirely inappropriate."

Charges he was "physically aggressive" and "verbally abusive" were also found proven.

Mr Cobb, a nurse of 20 years' experience, was sent home later that day by the care home's deputy manager and later told an internal investigation he was entirely to blame for the incident.

He said he had a "man to man" relationship with Resident A, a description the panel criticised. His relationship should have been "nurse to patient", it said.

Announcing its decision to strike off the nurse, the panel said: "Mr Cobb's actions resulted in actual psychological harm and had the obvious potential for serious physical harm.

"His behaviour was deliberately intimidating and arguably violent. He abused his position of trust.

"He violated Resident A's right to receive appropriate compassionate care and demonstrated aggressive and confrontational conduct."
