An elderly couple who died outside their home in the Western Isles in freezing conditions have been laid to rest on the island.

Donald Macmillan, 73, and his wife, Morag, 67, were discovered lying outside their home in the small village of Gravir on the east coast of Lewis last Friday morning.

It is thought the husband and wife couple perished yards from each other as temperatures plummeted overnight.

They were discovered by police officers last week after a local raised the alarm shortly after 8am.

On Friday, they were buried at Gravir Free Church following a short service.

A wake was also held in the village on Thursday evening.

Rev Malcolm Macdonald, who led the funeral service, said the incident has shocked the whole community.

Mr Macdonald said: "People are very saddened and it is very difficult for relatives and neighbours.

"They were very quiet people and very well liked - easy to get on with and involved in the community in various ways.

"The post office they ran is where people go to and is the last one in the area."

Donald Macmillan, who grew up in the village, was the local postmaster for the past 50 years and was planning to retire within weeks.

The Gravir post office, which is run from his home, has been in the hands of his family for nearly 100 years.

Morag - better known as Maureen - hailed from Harris.

She previously worked in the district primary school round the corner from her home and was also a carer for a neighbour.

The couple had no children and devoted much of their time to helping good causes in the local community.

Police confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances involved in the incident.
