An 11-year-old girl who was knocked down by a police van is now in a stable condition, her family have said.

The girl, who has not been named, was struck by the marked vehicle in Elgin, Moray, around 6.50pm on Saturday.

Police Scotland said the van was on a routine patrol on the A941 when the incident occurred.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) is investigating the incident, which left the girl with serious injuries.

In a statement released through PIRC, her family said she was up and moving.

They said: "Our 11-year-old daughter is now in a stable condition and is up and moving and out of bed.

"We appreciate all the good wishes and support from everyone and the most important thing for us right now is to concentrate on our little girl's recovery.

"We would request that the media respect our privacy to allow us to deal with what has happened."

The child was taken to Dr Gray's Hospital after the collision before being flown to Aberdeen for further treatment.

PIRC said it would examine the events which led to the collision.

A spokesman for the watchdog said earlier: "The commissioner is carrying out an investigation into an incident in which a marked police van was involved in a collision with a 11-year-old girl on Saturday in Elgin.

"The girl suffered serious injuries and was initially treated at Dr Gray's Hospital, Elgin, before being later airlifted to the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital.

"The matter has been referred to the PIRC by Police Scotland for investigation and a report on the findings will be submitted to the deputy chief constable in due course."
