An Aberdeen gym has been evacuated after reports of a chemical incident.

Six fire engines were sent to the David Lloyd health club on Garthdee Road at around 3.25pm on Wednesday.

Firefighters evacuated the building and carried out checks on the swimming pool.

It is understood the investigation was focused around the pipework entering the pool area.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said crews carried out further investigations but no leaks or chemicals were found.

Emergency services were stood down at 5.10pm.

In statement sent out to members, general manager Susan Malcolm said the health club would remain closed until specialist engineers had repaired a valve in the plant room.

She said: "During a routine inspection, there was found to be an issue with one of the valves in the plant room.

"As a precautionary measure we decided to evacuate the club and call the fire brigade.

"They have now left, but the club will remain closed until specialist engineers have fixed the valve.

"At no point have any chemicals or gases leaked as a result of this issue, and the club has been closed temporarily purely as a precaution."
