Detectives investigating the murder of a mechanic received an anonymous letter about the killing.

Brian McKandie was beaten to death at his cottage near Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire, on March 11 or 12 this year.

It has now emerged that in the weeks following Mr McKandie's death a letter arrived at a police station in Aberdeenshire reportedly containing details of his murder.

Detective chief inspector Iain Smith said: "In late March an anonymous letter was received which provided some information regarding the death of Mr McKandie.

"I would like to appeal to that person to come forward and identify themselves as we believe they may hold information which will assist us with the investigation into his death."

Police are seeking three men seen near Mr McKandie's home in Badenscoth around the time of his death.

One man described as 6ft with an average build was seen walking towards the nearby village of Rothienorman shortly before 1am on Saturday. He was wearing dark clothing and possibly a hat.

Mr Smith said: "At that time of day in that area, where there is no footpath or street lighting, it would be unusual to see someone in the roadway.

"If that person was you or you know who it was, we would like to hear from you."

"Despite speaking to a large number of people we are still looking to identify the two men and burgundy or maroon estate car that were seen at Mr McKandie's address between 1.30pm and 2pm on Friday, March 11."

One is believed to have been between 40 and 50, with a heavy build and dark hair. The other is thought to have been aged between 20 and 30, with a thin build and blonde, possibly collar-length blonde hair.

Crimestoppers has offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of Mr McKandie's killer and can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
