Vandals smashed protective glass around an ancient Pictish stone on display in Forres, causing more than £10,000 of damage.

The panels surround the Sueno's Stone, which dates from the ninth century, and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The Pictish carved stone is the largest to have survived since the medieval period, and stands over 21ft tall.

It stands in a purpose built glass shelter on the edge of the town of Forres beside a disused spur of road near a roundabout between the B9011 and the A96.

PC Jamie Walker said: "It is disappointing for the community that this has happened and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time.

"Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101."
