Extreme weather left North Sea oil workers stranded offshore as 50ft waves battered their platform.

Crew aboard the Judy facility 150 miles off the coast of Aberdeen were due to arrive home on Thursday.

But rough sea conditions meant helicopters were unable to fly and they only returned to land on Saturday afternoon.

A video shot aboard the Judy on Friday shows 50ft waves hitting the platform and the neighbouring CoslRival accommodation rig.

The weather also delayed the return of S92 helicopters which were grounded over safety concerns this week.

Manufacturer Sikorsky called for inspections to the tail rotors of all S92s on Tuesday after a helicopter spun out of control trying to land offshore.

STV News revealed on Friday that inspections showed possible faults with at least four helicopters.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) believes the incident aboard the West Franklin platform occurred after a bearing failed in the rotor of the S92 and could have happened at any time.

The helicopter spun 187 degrees before its pilot forced it down and its 11 crew and passengers disembarked safely.
