A delivery driver who died after his van ran off an icy road and hit a tree has been described by colleagues as a "kind, gentle man".

Douglas McBain died when the JG Ross bakery van crashed on Burghmuir Road in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, in the early hours of Thursday.

Mr McBain's employer Cameron Ross paid tribute to him in a statement on the JG Ross (Bakers) Facebook page.

Mr Ross said: "Douglas was a kind, gentle man who was well liked by colleagues and customers alike.

"Customers have retold how he was always happy to lend a hand or do them a favour and that he brought a smile to their face when he came in with their order.

"In his spare time he was an enthusiastic bowler winning many trophies and was president of the Highland Bowling Association, president of Elgin & District Indoor Bowling Club and president of Cullen Bowling Club this year."

Mr Ross said he had been inundated with calls and messages from colleagues, adding that his thoughts were with his family and friends.

Mr McBain had worked for JG Ross since October 2005, initially delivering from its bakery in Portsoy.

In 2010, he moved to the Inverurie branch, delivering to the Fraserburgh and Peterhead areas.

Mr McBain is believed to have suffered a heart attack at the wheel shortly before the crash.
