An anthrax scare sparked a five-hour lockdown at a block of flats in Aberdeen.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics were called to Virginia Court at around 4.20pm on Monday following claims about the deadly substance.

Concerns were also raised for the welfare of a 32-year-old woman but officers found she was not in danger and there was no anthrax involved.

Residents were not allowed to enter the city centre building until after 9pm.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Officers attended Virginia Court in Aberdeen at around 4.20pm on Tuesday, January 24, following medical concerns that had been raised for a 32-year-old woman.

"Following enquiries, it was established there was no threat to her safety or wellbeing and she did not require medical treatment."

Inspector Rob Sturton said: "At no stage was there any threat to the wider public and police units were in attendance alongside other emergency services as part of protocol.

"There are no suspicious circumstances and officers had left the scene by around 9.30pm."
