Two hillwalkers who were reported overdue in Cairngorms have been found safe after a major overnight search in "challenging" weather conditions.

The men had set off for a walk in the Broad Cairn area from the Loch Muick car park near Braemar, Aberdeenshire, on Monday morning.

Their families contacted police at around 7pm after the pair failed to get into contact.

Four specialist mountain rescue teams from the Aberdeen and Dundee police divisions worked alongside Braemar Mountain Rescue Team to search for the men.

The Coastguard helicopter was also called in to support the operation but was not needed.

The two men were found at around 4.30am on Tuesday, and were walked back to safety.

They are not believed to be injured however they were suffering from "exposure to the elements".

Braemar Mountain Rescue Team praised an "incredible team effort" in finding the missing pair and warned people heading out on the mountains to be fully prepared.

A post on the team's Facebook page said: "Team members just getting back in after an overnight call in the Broad Cairn area looking for two missing hillwalkers, both of whom were traced safe and well in the wee hours. Weather conditions for the search were challenging.

"Thanks to Tayside and Aberdeen MRTs as well as Coastguard Rescue 951.

"Small reminder if heading out into the mountains, please be prepared and have the relevant skill base."
