Two 13-year-old girls have been charged over a blaze that caused more than £10,000 of damage to a shipyard.

Macduff Shipyards announced last Wednesday that it had bought the disused Buckie yard and planned to bring it back into use by summer 2018.

The decision has raised hopes for a revival of the north east's dormant shipbuilding industry.

On Sunday, a blaze broke out at the yard which left a former office building badly damaged.

Two girls have been charged with wilful-fire raising and will be reported to Police Scotland's Youth Justice Management Unit.

Macduff Shipyards managing director John Watt said the incident has not altered the firm's plans.

"We had bought the site from Moray Council only last week and had already started to work on the building," he said.

"It is extremely disappointing that this incident has occurred so early into our ownership.

"We would like to thank the local community for the assistance they provided to the police."
