A driver has been killed and residents are trapped in their homes as storms battered the north of Scotland.

Schools have also been forced to close, trams have been cancelled and roads have been shut due to flooding.

A man died after his vehicle was crushed on the A85 two miles east of Gilmerton in Perthshire, around 8pm on Tuesday.

Residents living on Soy Avenue in Portsoy, Aberdeenshire, are currently trapped while others in the street, including those living at a care home, have been evacuated.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Six houses and a care home have been affected by the flooding on Soy Avenue.

"Three people are also having to be rescued. We have 11 firefighters at the scene."

Meanwhile, schools in Moray and Aberdeenshire have also had to close.

Fordyce, Ordiquhill, Portsoy and Whitehills schools have all shut due to the storms.

Parks have also flooded in the region, including Mineralwell Park in Stonehaven.

Tram services between Edinburgh Airport and Edinburgh Park Central have also been suspended.

The A8 underpass between Edinburgh Gateway and the Gyle Centre is currently flooded.

Tayside and Angus have also been affected by the storms, with several roads blocked due to fallen trees.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: "Most of the country has been affected by rain over the last 24 hours with the worst affecting Eastern areas.

"Around Edinburgh in the last 24 hours, around 60mm of rain has fallen. This is 15 times the rainfall during the whole month of May which was a very dry month with only 4mm recorded.

"Fyvie in Aberdeenshire has recorded 64mm of rain in the last 24 hours while Dyce in Aberdeen has recorded 49mm."
