A stretch of the A90 near a McDonald's was forced to close after a van carrying a prisoner broke down.

The van broke down on the southbound carriageway near Forfar, between McDonald's and the Lochlands junction, at 9.50am on Wednesday.

The vehicle was travelling from Kittybrewster Police Station in Aberdeen to Dundee Sheriff Court.

Police were forced to close the road until a replacement van arrived.

The prisoner was then assisted into the van by officers around 30 minutes later.

G4S director of operations for prisoner escort services in Scotland Willie Galloway said: "A new vehicle was quickly dispatched and, in line with agreed security procedures, police officers closed the carriageway while the prisoner on board was safely transferred to the replacement van.

"The road was reopened shortly afterwards and there was no risk to the public."
