A nursery has been ordered to carry out a deep clean by a care watchdog concerned over children being at risk of illness.

The Care Inspectorate has served a formal improvement notice on Little Einsteins Nursery in Perth.

It has given management of the facility until the end of August to "thoroughly clean the entire nursery" and to "put in place and implement a system for cleaning the nursery in order to ensure that it consistently remains in a clean and hygienic state".

Little Einsteins must also "put in place and implement robust and consistent infection control practices to keep children safe and minimise risk of illness and infection to children."

The body which oversees children's services also ordered the Whitefriars Crescent nursery to reorganise playrooms to "improve the learning environment and level of comfort and safety for children using the service."

A spokesman for the Care Inspectorate said: "This improvement notice clearly lays out the areas which require swift improvement, so that children are protected and the care they receive is of a standard they have right to expect.

"We will work closely with this nursery to support improvement and check on progress. If we are not satisfied that swift and sustained progress is being made to address these issues, we will not hesitate to take further action.

"Every child in Scotland has the right to safe, good quality and compassionate care which meets their needs and respects their rights."

As part of the improvement notice, the nursery must ensure all staff receive training in child protection relevant and are able to demonstrate that they have the "skills and knowledge to protect children from harm" by the end of August.

Little Einsteins runs six nurseries across Scotland, with branches in Dundee, Arbroath, Glasgow and Kirkcaldy.
