Second World War medals, jewellery and other items with a high sentimental value have been stolen from a home in Aberdeen.

Foreign currency, an old district nursing badge and a full dress kilt were also stolen during the "despicable" theft by housebreaking.

The break-in happened between Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon in the Seafield area of the city.

The stolen jewellery, including a heart-shaped green stone necklace with a naval reference and a pearl necklace with a diamante catch, is worth a four figure sum.

Officers investigating the incident have appealed for information.

Detective Sergeant John Snedden said: "These items hold high sentimental value and I can't begin to imagine the distress this has caused.

"This is a completely despicable theft where there has been no regard for the emotional and financial impact on the people targeted and I can assure the public it will not be tolerated.

"I would urge anyone with information or anyone who saw any suspicious people in the area around the time in question to please contact the police."

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
