Motorists were hit by long traffic delays in Dundee city centre after fire broke out in a derelict building near the Tay Bridge.

The fire started at around 12.30pm in the building on Dock Street. Emergency services closed one lane of the street as firefighters tackled the blaze, causing long tailbacks on the A991, which merges with the A92 Tay Bridge route.

The Tay Bridge twitter account posted: "Due to fire in Dundee CC traffic is now queuing northbound and substantially into Fife on the A92 approach."

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 12:26pm on Friday, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a fire at a derelict building in Dundee.

"A total of four fire appliances were mobilised to a two-storey building in the city's Dock Street.

"Firefighters dressed in protective breathing apparatus tackled the flames with high-powered hoses.

"Crews remain at the scene as they carry out dampening down work and checking for hot spots.

"A joint investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out with Police Scotland in due course."

Motorist Sean Reilly‏ tweeted: "Been queued on the Tay Bridge for about 20 minutes now and only halfway across it."

Another said motorist that he had been stuck in traffic for more than 45 minutes, trying to get into the city centre.
