Two Typhoon jets were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth to intercept Russian bombers heading towards Scotland.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning and is the latest in a series of aerial stand-offs over the North Sea between the Royal Air Force and the Russian Air Force.

The two Typhoon jets headed north to meet the Russian pilots who subsequently turned around meaning no direct interception occurred.

A Voyager aircraft was scrambled from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to refuel the jets as they guarded British airspace over the North Sea.

A spokesman for the RAF said: "RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth launched to monitor two Russian Military aircraft as they approached the UK area of interest, however, the aircraft turned away and no intercept took place."
