A man who was having a fit burned a dog with boiling water and failed to take him to the vets.

Stewart Milne, of Dundee, was jailed for not providing veterinary treatment, resulting in his dog Buddy suffering injuries to his back and net.

The 29-year-old only applied Sudocrem to Buddy after spilling a kettle of boiling water over the dog when he had an epileptic fit while making coffee.

Buddy has since been rehomed following the incident.

Milne, of St Columba's Gardens, pleaded guilty to causing the dog unnecessary suffering between May 2 and May 7 at his home last year.

Scottish SPCA inspector Karen Cooper said: "The wounds on Buddy were extensive, with several of them scabbed over and infected with yellow pus.

"They clearly needed treatment and would have been causing Buddy considerable pain.

"Buddy received the wounds after Milne suffered a fit while making coffee and spilled a kettle of boiling water over the dog.

"A responsible dog owner would have immediately sought veterinary treatment for the dog but sadly in this circumstance that was not the case.

"We are glad that Milne has been dealt with by the courts and hope he gives serious consideration to his ability to care for animals in the future."

Milne further admitted possessing a knife outside his home on January 10 this year and of failing to appear in court on April 18.

Defence solicitor Anne Duffy added: "He has struggled with what happened to the dog and the dog being taken from him.

"He didn't realise how serious the injuries were and it got infected.

"After the case became public knowledge he was verbally and physically attacked. At one point he said he was in fear for his life.

"There was perhaps a lack of understanding. He put Sudocrem on the dog's wounds in an attempt to treat the dog himself, considering that sufficient treatment.

"The omission was not wilful or because he didn't care for the dog - he did. He does accept that the dog suffered and knows that this is a particularly horrific offence.

"He cared for the dog and loved it and is remorseful for failing to get it treatment timeously."

Sheriff Lorna Drummond QC jailed Milne for a total of 320 days.

She said: "The charge concerning the lack of care for your dog is particularly concerning and the dog must have suffered quite a lot at your hands.

"My view is that these are serious matters and the only alternative to prison, a restriction of liberty order, is just not sufficient punishment."
