An exhausted dog saved from drowning by the coastguard is doing well, its rescuers say.

The Moray team was called out after the cockapoo got into trouble near Cummingstown on Sunday morning.

A helicopter that had been training in the area guided their rescue boat to the dog and they brought it aboard.

The cockapoo was checked over by a local vet and is not believed to have been harmed by its misadventure.

A spokesman for Moray Coastguard said: "The dog was rescued exhausted and having nearly drowned and taken back into harbour where the crew and coastguard officers provided first aid until the owner could arrange to attend a local vet.

"Happily, the dog is doing well. Never follow animals into the water, they are much better swimmers than humans."
