A former Dundee FC youth footballer has woken up from an induced coma after being found unconscious in an alleged street attack.

John Black, 20, was taken to Ninewells Hospital in a critical condition after the incident on Old Hawkhill Road in Dundee.

The midfielder, who left the club last year, was on a life support machine for ten days.

His mother June has revealed he has now woken up following a life-saving operation.

Mr Black was found bleeding from the head after the alleged attack on Sunday, October 8, at 2.30am.

In an update on her son's condition, his mother said: "John was taken to theatre to have a life-saving operation on his skull to release the pressure in his head (decompressive craniotomy).

"Further post-operative work will be required in a few months.

"John has woken up from the induced coma and was able to be transferred to the high dependency unit on Tuesday night."

She added John is having memory issues following the incident.

"John is very weak and still has some intravenous meds given to him," she said.

"He appears to have some short-term memory issues but we expected that. But he recognises us and can answer basic questions.

"As to long-term issues, the signs are looking good but those are yet to be known. This is really just the start of John's recovery and he may require some months in hospital yet."

Robert Chambers, 23, was arrested and charged in court with assault to severe injury and danger of life.

Chambers, of Dundee, made no plea or declaration during the private hearing at Dundee Sheriff Court and was committed for further examination.

He was released on bail and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
