A barn in Aberdeenshire caught fire twice in a day, scorching 700 bales of hay.

Firefighters first attended Balhagarty Stud Farm, a horse-breeding farm near Laurencekirk, shortly after midday on Wednesday when bales of hay caught fire.

The blaze was extinguished just after 1pm but crews were called back to the scene at 4.15pm after the fire restarted.

They remained at the scene on Thursday. The cause is being treated as unexplained.

No people or livestock were injured in the fire and damage was restricted solely to the barn.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue estimated around 700 bales of hay were alight in the barn.
