The bomb squad was called after a high explosive device was found in a garden shed.

The discovery was made at a property on Gordon Street in Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Evacuations were made after the high explosive artillery shell was found at noon on Saturday.

A section of the street was also closed off for around five hours.

Sergeant John Kearney said: "With the rugby and football both on Saturday we were expecting the centre of town to be busier than usual.

"To have to close one of the main streets in Huntly was less than ideal, however, our main priority is your safety so until we could establish exactly what the device was and dispose of it safely this was the only option available to us.

"Thankfully nearby residents were extremely supportive and made an extremely resource-intensive job as straightforward as we could have hoped for, so thank you."

He added: "If anyone ever discovers an object which could possibly be a discarded or disused explosive, then we advise you not to touch it, mark and note the location as best possible and notify the police."
