A man has been detained following a police pursuit of a van on the A90.

Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle veer across the road near Portlethen, crossing from the north to the south carriageway.

The blue Ford Transit van was finally brought to a halt outside the Ashvale fish and chip shop on Muirend Road in the Aberdeenshire town at around 5pm on Tuesday.

It appeared to have been involved in a collision and its front tyres had been shredded.

Police Scotland confirmed a 29-year-old man, who was the van's only occupant, had been detained and said they were acting as part of a "wider operation".

Road policing sergeant Steve Manson added: "This operation involved specialist officers as well officers from Road Policing and enquiries were carried out in the Portlethen area.

"No one was injured as a result of this incident however it could have been far worse. At one point the vehicle was on the wrong side of the road."
