A pensioner has died after a fire in Aberdeenshire.

The 86-year-old woman was at a sheltered housing complex when the blaze took place.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Nether Davah House on Golf Crescent, Inverurie, at around 5.35pm on Wednesday.

Police say the fire was quickly extinguished and was contained to one flat.

The woman was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where she later died of her injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing but it is not considered suspicious.

The woman has not yet been named.
