A school for pupils with additional support needs has been forced to close due to an outbreak of flu.

Council and public health officials announced on Wednesday night they would shut Carronhill School in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, with immediate effect.

Increasing numbers of pupils and staff had been showing flu-like symptoms, leading to the decision to start the Christmas holidays early.

Carronhill School includes a nursery unit and caters for pupils aged three to 18 who require additional support.

It will reopen as scheduled on January 8 next year, officials added.

An Aberdeenshire Council spokesman said: "Due to a number of pupils and teachers experiencing flu-like symptoms the decision has been taken to close Carronhill School in Stonehaven from tomorrow.

"It is anticipated it will reopen on Monday, January 8 2018 as scheduled."
