A man left a pensioner with broken ribs and a collapsed lung after a violent attack in his home.

Alan Waterston appeared at Ian Beat's door on Whitfield Rise, Dundee, thinking he was at a friend's house nearby.

When Mr Beat answered the banging, Waterston forced himself inside before assaulting the 69-year-old, leaving him bleeding and struggling to breathe.

Mr Beat managed to escape from the house into the garden, leaving Waterston locked inside until police arrived.

Fiscal depute Vicki Bell said: "The complainer was found bleeding and struggling to breathe.

"The accused was still in the property, extremely agitated and shouting.

"Police set up a cordon and two officers stood at the front and back doors.

"The accused, who was under the influence, eventually opened a window and was pulled out.

"An ambulance was called and the complainer was taken to hospital having suffered a number of injuries.

"That included a punctured and collapsed lung and two fractured ribs."

Mr Beat was in hospital for several days and had a chest drain inserted to remove fluid from his lung.

He also contracted pneumonia while in hospital.

Fiscal depute Vicki Bell added: "It is fair to say this has had a devastating impact on his life.

"He still experiences physical pain and psychological impacts."

Waterston, 27, of Ballindean Road, Dundee, pleaded guilty on indictment to assaulting Mr Beat on February 26 last year.

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael deferred sentence until February 13 for social work background reports and released Waterston on bail.
