Orkney island without power after damage to cables
Almost 500 residents on the Island of Sanday were left for hours without power.
An island in Orkney was left without power after damage to an overhead cable.
The entire Island of Sanday, the third largest Orkney Isle, was without power since around midday on Wednesday.
Around 500 people live on the island.
At around 5pm, the local emergency co-ordinating group held a meeting to discuss the issue.
Inspector Keith Bendall said: "Just after midday today strong winds on Sanday Island resulted in damage to an overhead power cable causing power to the entire Island being lost.
"A meeting was called to assess risk and implement a solution and it is hoped that Scottish Power staff will be able to restore power later this evening.
"As it stands analogue phone communication is possible, however we have implemented a communication fall back facilitated by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who will be available with a radio link to the mainland should the need arise.
"Plans are also in place to check on vulnerable people within the community."
Power was eventually restored across the island around 9pm on Wednesday.
