A wind farm which Donald Trump fought a series of legal battles against has generated power for the first time.

Eleven of the world's most powerful wind turbines have been built off the coast of Aberdeen, a short distance from a golf course owned by the US President.

Each turbine stands around 630ft tall - the height of three Scott Monuments - and Trump claims they spoil the view from his links.

He described wind turbines as "ugly, money-sucking, bird-killing industrial windmills" and once claimed they each "kill six pensioners".

However, they are also each capable of generating enough electricity in a single turn to power a home for a day.

The wind farm - officially known as a the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre of EOWDC - produced electricity for the first time on Sunday.

It comes days before Trump's first presidential visit to the UK - a trip which is likely to include a stop at one of his Scottish golf courses before he jets off to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

He last visited Scotland in 2016 during a brief break from his successful run for the presidency.

EOWDC project director Adam Ezzamel said: "First power reinforces North-east Scotland's status as Europe's energy capital and will help establish the region as an international centre for offshore wind generation."

The EOWDC will be used to test new offshore wind turbines and make them more efficient.

Energy minister Paul Wheelhouse described the latest development as a "very significant milestone".

He added: "Once the test and demonstration site is fully operational, not only will this help the offshore wind sector further reduce its costs but the output of the EOWDC will itself add significantly to Scotland's renewable electricity capacity."

Trump fought a series of legal battles against the EOWDC and vowed to take the fight to European courts - although he has not discussed the issue publicly since 2016.

They stand a short distance from Trump International Golf Links at Balmedie, which was given planning permission three years before the wind farm.
