Hundreds of fish could be at risk on salmon rivers in Perthshire because of the hot weather and low water levels.

Experts say the Tay and its tributaries need rain within the next fortnight or some of the fish may perish.

Angler John Mottam said: "The water level is very low. The sunshine isn't helping.

"I know everybody else likes sunshine for holidaymakers. For fishing it doesn't work."

After six to eight weeks of no rain, water levels have receded significantly while tributaries such as the River Ericht at Blairgowrie are also feeling the impact.

The conditions have led to salmon trying to get upstream to spawn being trapped in pools.

David Summers, of the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board, said: "This is as low as I have ever seen the River Ericht.

"I have never seen it so hot for so long. I have never seen this area so denuded of water."

Experts are now worried that rising water temperatures will stress the fish and make them susceptible to disease.

Salmon fishing is worth millions of pounds a year to Perthshire and those whose livelihoods depend on it are now hoping for a change in the weather to replenish the area's rivers.
