A bed made from alpaca wool has gone on sale at a store in Dundee for £75,000.

The Diamond Majesty bed from luxury brand Vispring is being monitored by CCTV while it's on display at the Gillies home shop in Broughty Ferry.

It will be on display in the store until July 22, before visiting Martin & Frost in Edinburgh for the last week of July, followed by And So To Bed in Glasgow at the start of August.

Part of the reason the bed is so pricey is the mattress, which is made from Vicuna wool - a type of alpaca - and considered one of the rarest, finest fibres in the world.

Staff at the Gillies store reckon it is the most expensive bed in the world.

Bed and floor manager Don McBride told STV News: "Vispring probably represents the best craftmanship and workmanship of any bed I've ever seen in 26 years.

"They're actually based in Plymouth. Handmade, every single part of a Vispring bed has got natural material and a heavy amount of labour goes into making any mattress or any base."

Mr McBride added: "This bed has got three rows of pocket-springing, it's got upholstery such as horsetail.

"Probably not a lot of people have heard of Vicuna, but it's a particular animal based in Peru and there's a very limited cut of hair every year - and they export four tonnes of it.

"In fact, as a perfect example, a pair of gloves made in that Vicuna fabric can be £1000."
