A group campaigning against Aberdeen FC's new stadium have submitted their legal challenge to the development.

No Kingsford Stadium ltd (NKSL) have lodged a petition for a judical review at the Court of Session.

Work has already started on the £50m development at Kingsford near Westhill after Aberdeen city councillors gave it their backing in January.

The new 20,000-seater stadium and training facilities are across the city from the Dons' current Pittodrie home.

Campaigners say they want to promote the use of the land in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

They are seeking a judicial review of the decision to grant planning permission.

Mrs Diane Reid, director of NKSL, said: "We wish to thank all those who have supported us.

"We believe Aberdeen City Council has failed in its duty to properly determine this application.

"We are confident that the court process will bring independent and impartial scrutiny to the decision and that we have a real prospect of success."

She continued: "Today, we have demonstrated that communities can challenge inappropriate development and we look forward to the coming proceedings."

The club has said the new grounds will provide "best-in-class" training facilities.

A decision on whether the case can proceed is expected from the court in around two months.
