A teenager has been arrested and charged with assault following an investigation into the treatment of residents at a care home.

Muirhead care home in Alford, Aberdeenshire, has been ordered to close temporarily after the Care Inspectorate raised safety fears.

Police Scotland said a 16-year-old girl had been arrested over a "minor assault" at the home which was brought to their attention.

A woman in her 90s, who is a resident in the home, was not injured in the incident.

Her family have been made aware of the Inquiry.

Detective inspector David Howieson said: "Whilst carrying out enquiries into reported concerns at Muirhead Care Home, an isolated alleged incident was brought to our attention dating back to June 17, 2018.

"A 16-year-old female has subsequently been charged in connection."

He added: "We are continuing to work with our partners including the Care Inspectorate and Aberdeenshire Council in relation to wider concerns raised at the home which I know have attracted much public attention.

"These enquiries are very much ongoing and officers from the enquiry team are in the process of making contact with the residents of the home or their relatives or representatives."
