A man had to be rescued after going for a swim at Arbroath Harbour.

His friend jumped in after him, but was unable to pull the man to safety.

Police and firefighters eventually managed to get him out of the water before he was taken to hospital for a check-up.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police Scotland attended Arbroath Harbour shortly after 2.15am today in response to reports of a person in the water.

"Coastguard were alerted and attended, however prior to their arrival a man was assisted from the water by police officers and Scottish Fire & Rescue Service.

"He did not appear to be injured, but was taken to Ninewells Hospital for precautionary checks."
