A top Scottish University has hit out after a "shocking" video showing one of their students being racially abused in a nightclub was posted online.

Aberdeen University politics student Samantha Nyariri was told to "get back up your tree and pick coconuts" after an argument over spilled drinks in the cities Prohibition nightclub last Thursday.

Samantha, from York, said security in the club ignored her complaints when she reported the abuse she was subjected to from an overly aggressive man.

Speaking to STV News a University spokesperson said: "We were shocked to read reports of this incident.

"Our student support team have since contacted the student to see if they can provide any assistance."

The short video clip was posted online by student newspaper The Tab who also spoke to Samantha about the incident.

She said: "He got in my face and started yelling at me while I was trying to apologise.

"I offered to replace the spilt drink but he didn't really want to hear it. At that point, he was literally screaming in my face and his friends were trying to hold him back and apologising on his behalf."

On Saturday hundreds of anti-racism campaigners marched in Glasgow just a day after a terror-attack in New Zealand that left 49 dead.

The demo was part of UN anti-racism day with marches held in 26 other countries including England and Wales.
