A controversial planning application for homes at Donald Trump's Aberdeenshire golf course has been recommended for approval.

As well as the construction of up to 500 townhouses, cottages, country homes and villas within the Menie Estate, the plans also include shops, food and drink outlets, and offices.

There have been more than 2900 objections to the Trump Organisation's plans, with one letter containing a petition with 18,722 names. There have been only three valid representations of support.

Councillors on the Formartine area committee will give their views on Tuesday.

A decision on the planning permission in principle will then be made at a full Aberdeenshire Council meeting next month.

Planners have recommended giving the green light, subject to several conditions, including addressing tree loss concerns.

The council report claims the economic impact of the homes have "considerable merit".

It said: "The planning service considers the potential economic benefits of the proposed development to have considerable merit."
