Police are investigating after a group of primary school children were threatened with a knife in Perthshire.

A young boy was then found to have a pen-knife in his possession after being searched by police officers in Auchterarder on Wednesday night.

Police intervened after officers on patrol were flagged down and informed of the incident.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: "Officers on patrol in Auchterarder on the evening of March 27 were flagged down and made aware of an incident involving a group of local children.

"Acting on information provided, officers searched one young person and a pen-knife was recovered.

"At the time, the officers concerned took initial action which was considered to be appropriate given the circumstances and the age of the children involved.

"This was of course on the understanding that further enquiry would follow in due course.

"We have continued those enquiries today and have made sure that the school are fully aware although the incident did not take place on school grounds or within school hours.

"Incidents involving young people and knives are a big concern for all of us and I would seek to reassure local parents that our response to this incident will get the level of priority it rightly deserves."
