Two men accused of murder had previously threatened to kill another man with an axe, a trial has heard.

Callum Davidson, 24,  and Steven Dickie, 24, who are on trial for the murder of Steven Donaldson, are said to have threatened Sam Wilkie over the phone during an ongoing row over Mr Wilkie's former girlfriend.

The High Court in Edinburgh was told Mr Wilkie's relationship with the woman had ended in August 2017. She then began seeing Davidson's friend Dickie.

The following January, the woman's car was "smashed up", which allegedly prompted Dickie and Davidson to make the threatening calls.

Mr Wilkie said that during the calls, Dickie asked him to meet at the Peter Pan Play Park in Kirriemuir, Angus.

When prosecution lawyer Ashley Edwards QC asked Mr Wilkie to recall what Davidson said, he replied: "Callum was shouting 'You're getting killed. I'm gonna kill you when I see you'."

In another call, Davidson allegedly told him: "I've got an axe. I'm going to find you s***e bag."

Davidson's advocate Jonathan Crowe told Mr Wilkie during cross examination that his client did not shout any abuse about having an axe during the phone calls.

Mr Wilkie then said: "It was either him or Steven who said that. It was definitely one of them."

Dickie, Davidson and 20-year-old Tasmin Glass are currently on trial for the murder of Glass' former boyfriend Steven Donaldson during an alleged attack at the same play park.

Prosecutors claim that between June 6, 2018, and June 7, 2018, Dickie, Davidson and Glass arranged to meet Mr Donaldson, 27, at the Peter Pan Play Park in Kirriemuir and assaulted him there by repeatedly striking him with "unknown weapons".

The trio, who all come from the Kirriemuir area, are then alleged to have taken Mr Donaldson to the Kinnordy Nature Reserve car park while he was incapacitated.

Once at the park, the Crown claims that Mr Donaldson was struck on the head and body with a knife, baseball bat, and an "unknown heavy bladed instrument".

The accused are then alleged to have set fire to Mr Donaldson and to his car.

All three plead not guilty and the trial continues.
